Oil heat won't turn on? Before you assume the worst, run through this quick no-heat checklist. Many "no heat" calls come down to a few simple things you can check yourself in a couple of minutes.

The No-Heat Checklist

• Thermostat: set to HEAT, temperature above the current room temp, and check the batteries. A blank or dead thermostat is a common culprit.
• Power & switches: make sure the emergency switch (often a red switch plate at the top of the basement stairs or near the burner) is ON, and check the breaker for the heating system.
• Oil level: check your tank gauge. If you're out, that's your answer — see what to do if you run out.
• The reset button: your burner or its primary control has a red RESET button. Press it ONCE. If the system fires and stays running, great. Do not press it repeatedly — each press dumps unburned oil into the chamber and can become a hazard.

If It Still Won't Start

If one reset doesn't do it — or the system starts then shuts off — stop and call a professional. Repeated lockouts can mean a clogged filter/nozzle, a failing pump, or air in the lines (common after running dry, which needs priming). Forcing it risks damage and safety issues.
