Heating oil additives and treatments promise smoother winters and fewer service calls — but do you actually need one? Here's a plain-English look at what they do and when they're worth it for a Long Island home.

What Heating Oil Additives Do

• Anti-gel / cold-flow: keeps oil flowing in extreme cold so outdoor tanks and lines don't "gel" and clog during a deep freeze.
• Stability & sludge control: slows the formation of the sludge that builds up at the bottom of a tank, helping protect filters and nozzles.
• Water dispersant: manages the small amounts of condensation/water that collect in tanks and feed sludge and corrosion.
• Combustion improvers: can help the fuel burn a touch cleaner and more efficiently.

Do You Actually Need One?
